Some exciting things, big and small, are afoot in the world of Ruth. The title of this blog should clearly be “Ruth in Transition.” Here are some of the exciting things, in no particular order:
- I started running about 10 days ago, and I’m really liking it. I’m trying not to feel inadequate, given the number of people I know who are or were serious runners. Even the number of marathon runners in my office is intimidating. But even though I had run before, sometimes somewhat consistently, it never really stuck. I’m hoping this sticks! I signed up for a 5K at the end of August to keep myself motivated.
- That 5K at the end of August is in upstate NY. That’s because somewhere between the middle of July and the middle of August, Dave and I are moving to Rochester! Dave is starting a PhD program at the U of R, and I’m currently job hunting. We — fingers crossed — may be on the way to securing an apartment. One blessing of Rochester is the ridiculously low cost of living, especially compared to a big hub city like DC. I’m currently trying not to get frustrated with people who hate on this plan. I readily admit that I had my own anti-upstate bias to shake off, and I understand the perception of burnt-out northeast post-industrial cities. But for every person who has something positive to say about Rochester, there are at least two people who take the opportunity to hate on: a) upstate NY b) lake effect snow c) cold weather, broadly posed d) nonexistent job prospects in cold cities with lake effect snow or e) moving for a reason other than your own changing employment situation. But haters are gonna hate, and I, for my own part, am doing my best to stay optimistic. I happen to like small cities, cold weather, and proximity to outdoor activities. I also happen to like Dave a lot, which helps.
- I’m already anticipating missing DC. (Minus the summer weather, though. I don’t care how much you love heat. I have a fainting disorder.) Although I wish we could all stay in the same place, I’m glad that Bonnie, Matt, and Aaron will be here, so that I have plenty of excuses to visit! I do think that DC is a supremely cool place to have lived, both as a city and because it’s our capital.
- Those last three updates went in a very logical order, despite my statement at the beginning that they wouldn’t.
- Andrew, one of my oldest and best friends on the planet, got into an MFA program last week. I am amazingly proud and excited. I’m also glad I saved all those birthday cards and presents he ever made me, so that years from now, I can brag about owning a vintage piece.
- I’m reading a non-icky book about job hunting and career planning. On the one hand, I don’t normally read self-help books. On the other hand, I am an overanalyzing overachiever.
That’s about all the updating I can think to do right now. If anyone has actually expected updates prior to now, and is curious about my existence, let me know.
